Prayer Journals
I was invited this afternoon to a retirement community for nuns in a nearby town. Sister Betsy gave a wonderful talk on how she uses her prayer journal. I just loved the idea and wanted to share it with you.
She said she writes letters to God telling Him about her concerns, confessions and feelings. She pours it all out on paper. She then asks God for wisdom, a change of attitude, insight or whatever He deems helpful to her and her situation.
She said she then waits in silence until she feels an inner whisper that compels her to pick up her pen and write again. If she tries to keep the communication from God in her head, it doesn’t work. She likes to have it flow into her mind and heart and onto the page.
Sometimes she receives guidance from Mother Mary. Here’s a brief piece of wisdom she shared: “You are in a storm; that is true. You are not un-aided. God sees and hears your cries for help. Focus all your attention on Him; lean hard and continue to trust that He will bring you to safety. Recall for yourself your usual places for help and be alert for signs, directionals; they will be there when you need them.”
I just used this technique in my prayer time this evening. It was very comforting. I’d love to hear from you… How did this technique work for you?
